Alpina Pocket Watch, 1910s
Calibre Alpina 1722Condition — Lightly polished gold-plated case, original dial with even honey patina
Provenance — Acquired privately; no dealer, no paperwork.
The yellowed dial is what stopped me on this one — that even, biscuit-toned patina across the enamel, with black Arabic numerals and blued spade hands still crisp against it. I like that the Alpina signature sits clean above centre, untouched by the discolouration around it, and the small seconds sub-dial has kept its own outer minute track legible. Open the case and the calibre 1722 movement is gilt-finished, bridges engraved, jewels set in polished chatons, with a serial stamped into the case back that I won't reproduce here. The gold-tone case itself shows genuine handling: light scuffing to the covers, a scratch or two visible under the loupe, brassing starting at the bezel edge, nothing dramatic. This is a 1910s manual-wind piece for someone who wants dial character over case polish, and who wants to see the movement, not just wind it.
Buying from a stranger, in short. Every fault I know of is in the listing, and if you find one I missed, the return stands. Take the watch to a watchmaker of your choosing before you pay — I have never once objected. Fourteen days to send it back, for any reason at all.
