Girard-Perregaux Manual Wind 1950s
Condition — Lightly polished case, original cream-white dial with red-tipped hands and clean subsidiary seconds
Provenance — Bought at auction online, like most of what I keep.
What pulls me to this one is the red-tinted steel hands against a dial that's stayed genuinely white, not the yellowed cream you get on most 1950s pieces this age. It's a manual-wind Girard-Perregaux Sport, and what I'm looking at is a clean, applied Roman numeral chapter with a sunken subsidiary seconds at six, all under a crystal that's still glass rather than replaced plastic. The lugs show a touch of brassing where the plating has thinned with handling, and the caseback has the light scuffing you'd expect from a watch that was worn rather than kept in a drawer. Winding it, the crown action feels tight and the second hand sweeps without catching. I've left it on a simple canvas strap so the case can be judged on its own terms. It suits someone who wants a dressy period piece to wear, not one to shelve.
Buying from a stranger, in short. Every fault I know of is in the listing, and if you find one I missed, the return stands. Take the watch to a watchmaker of your choosing before you pay — I have never once objected. Fourteen days to send it back, for any reason at all.
