Longines Tank Dress Watch, 1930s
Calibre Longines 10.40The caseback on this one reads Wittnauer Wadsworth, not Longines, and I have never quite settled why a signed Longines dial and a 10.40 calibre ended up in an American gold-filled case rather than a Swiss one - it is the detail I keep coming back to on this piece. What you are looking at is a tonneau-shaped case with a silvered dial, mixed Roman and Arabic numerals in applied gold-tone, gilt leaf hands and a recessed subsidiary seconds register with its own printed track. The movement, visible through the back, is a manual-wind Longines 10.40 with fifteen jewels, its bridges showing light handling marks but no obvious damage. The case shows brassing at the lugs and edges, and the heavy woven gold-filled mesh bracelet has softened at the links with wear. I would put this in the hands of someone who wants a genuine 1930s tank-style Longines and is not troubled by an unmatched, American-cased history.
